Teaching is the most common profession among women on this site, and among the most compatible with family life — predictable hours, school holidays, and a respected position in most households. The variation that matters is between government schools, private schools and academies, which differ enormously in pay and security.

Profession is one of the first things families filter on here, and for good reason: it decides income, hours, whether the couple will move, and how much of the week they will actually see each other. Our profession list runs to more than three hundred entries across twenty groups, so “Teacher” means what it says rather than being lumped into a vague category.

What to verify

The school or college name, confirmed through its own office

The questions that actually matter

Government, private or academy?

A government teacher has security, a pension and a transfer liability. A private school teacher may earn more or considerably less. An academy teacher often works evenings, which changes the household routine entirely.

Will she continue after marriage?

Usually yes, and usually straightforwardly — but ask the mother-in-law, not only the groom.

Is a transfer likely?

Government postings move. Ask whether the family expects to stay in the district.

The commonest problem in this category is a qualification or position in progress being described as complete. It is rarely outright dishonesty and usually optimism, but it changes the proposal materially. Ask which stage, which year and which institution, and accept documents rather than descriptions.

Beyond the profession

A job title tells you what someone does for eight hours. It tells you nothing about the household you would be joining, which is what the marriage is actually about.

The household

Joint, nuclear or extended. Who else lives there, and where the couple will live in the first year specifically — ideally written into column 17 of the nikah nama rather than left to goodwill.

The hours

Shifts, call rotas, site postings, travel and month-end. A family expecting someone home by six should not be matched with a career that cannot deliver it.

Money, plainly

Whether income is salaried or from a family business, whether it is shared between brothers, and what is expected of a working spouse’s earnings. Her salary is hers.
