Before anything is agreed, establish the residency status precisely — citizen, permanent resident, work visa or student visa all carry different rights to sponsor a spouse, and a student visa usually carries none at all. Verify the current income requirement on the official government site rather than relying on what a relative went through three years ago; several countries have raised these thresholds sharply and recently.
What the wait actually looks like
Spouse visa processing runs to several months at best and well over a year in many cases. The families who cope with it are the ones who planned for it: who lives where during the wait, who pays the fees, how often they will travel, and what happens if the application is refused first time. A family with no answer to that last question has not thought the proposal through.
